Description

Trenches excavated by Mr. E.N. Mason in 1914 on a site along North Hill, to the rear of the brewery. Five of the trenches proved negative despite being dug to a depth of 6-8 ft. There is no record of whether subsoil was reached. One trench at the west end of the site revealed remains of Roman masonry walls of at least two periods but with no floors.<1> Plan of excavation in Hull's notes but with no north point and depth of remains below surface is not given.<2>
