Description

Excavation of a N-S running trench opposite the middle of the end of the last remaining house at the NE corner of St Helen's Lane. The purpose of the trench was to check whether an E-W running Roman wall was the cause of a sudden scarp along the north edge of the lane. The excavation revealed the foundation trench of a wall 6 ft. from the surface and 3 ft. 3 ins across. Sand and gravel surfaces also suggested the possibility of a Roman street, and a charcoal layer was felt to represent possible evidence of Boudican destruction in the area.<1>
