Description

Excavations were carried out by Rev. J.T. Round on Roman masonry visible to the north of the castle. Accounts of the investigations were kept by William Wire and C.Roach. From these it appears that several trenches were opened: 'through the hill west side of the Bailey...on the north side of the Castle immediately under the wall and...in the inner (east) quadrangle...on the south side of the pump inside the Castle'.<1> C. Roach wrote that: 'Round dug to ascertain the nature of the wall under the rampart...his excavation was made ...in the side nearer the Castle'.<2>
