Description

Excavations took place on the supposed site of a Roman fort or camp situated on allotments west of the junction of Park Road and Norman Way. (Grid TL 976247). Work went on for two or three weeks in an attempt to find the military ditch discovered near to the point in 1938 (see ECC815?) Topsoil was found to be only 9 inches deep beneath which was 24 inches of dirty sand and gravel and then the natural gravel.<1>
