Description

The site of a known Roman apsed building at No 22 Crouch Street became available for excavation in April 1965 due to redevelopment of the area for a car park. The object of the excavation was to recover the plan of the building and to establish its precise date. The site lay on the southern slopes of the former Creswell Brook. The contours of the slope had changed considerably since Roman times due to terracing which was found to have effected the survival of the building. A total of 12 trenches were opened which revealed that the building had been almost entirely robbed out.<1>
