Description
Long-term watching brief on the construction works for Stage One of Colchester’s Eastern Approaches Road. Three main visits were made at points along the route. One visit was made to an area of groundwork for a roundabout situated opposite No 26 Hythe Quay. A small cluster of re-used septaria was noted 121m back from the street frontage. The immediate area also revealed a light scatter of disturbed septaria and rare fragments of peg-tile. Elsewhere excavation of a 2 x 4m and 3m deep trench was observed, along with partial observation of a long narrow trench immediately behind the wharf edge. Three stages of wharf construction were observed, the earliest of which appeared to be Victorian. Observations on the east bank of the River Colne included a trench 9m x 5m x 2.5m deep and a 3m deep pit. Nothing of archaeological significance was noted at this location.<1><2>
