Description

Trial trenches were excavated to establish the existence and extent of archaeological deposits on the construction site of new offices for the waterworks at the foot of Balkerne Hill. Initially the west and north sides of a large pit were checked revealing a thick dump layer. Two trenches were then dug to establish the extent of this layer. A third trench measuring 2.5 x1 metre was excavated and helped establish the Roman levels at a height of around 7.0m O.D., 3m below the ground level of the surrounding reservoir. The lowest Roman levels appeared to rest on waterlogged gravels.<1>
