Description
Three areas (sites A,B and C) were examined to assess the state and quality of any surviving post-Roman archaeological remains and to judge how susceptible these would be to damage during the impending residential development. Excavation was limited to investigating the very latest remains when it became clear that the level of destruction was going to be modest. Sites A and B were located on areas which had been used as former car parks. Site C was in the playground of Stockwell School which was demolished as part of the development. Two small trial trenches were dug on site A, Trial trench 1 measured 2 x 1.2m and trial trench 2 measured 2.5 x 1.2m. The excavations and further clearance revealed the foundations of early 19th century buildings and a depth of dark earth. In trench 2 this sealed a backfilled robber trench and Roman building foundation. Site B revealed a complex of 19th century building foundations. Site C consisted of a machine-dug trench 23m long x 2m deep over most of its length. No Roman remains were encountered in the trench the lower levels of which consisted of a build up of dark earth.<1>
