Description

Archaeological monitoring and recording was undertaken by John Newman in June 2019 during the groundworks for the erection of new extensions. A total of 26m of foundation trench was excavated on the north-west and west side of the house. The 500mm wide trenches were excavated to 800-1100mm in depth, revealing 400mm of subsoil with small fragments of late post-medieval brick and tile plus two sherds of blue and white transfer printed pottery of c.1900 date. In the north-east corner of the excavations, a pit was also revealed which contained a few white ware sherds of late post-medieval date. The natural orange sand was defined below the subsoil. There was no evidence for activity of pre-late 19th century date.<1>
