Description

A small archaeological strip, map and record excavation was carried out by Colchester Archaeological Trust in January 2019 at Old House in advance of the installation of an open-air swimming pool and associated groundworks. Three pits were uncovered below topsoil (L1, c.0.15-0.18m thick), two (F1 and F3) of which provided material dating them from the 13th to the 16th centuries. Pit F1 was 1.13m widex 0.63m deep and contained seven sherds of peg-tile and two sherds of medieval pottery, giving a date range of AD 1300-1550 for this feature. Pit F3 was 0.59m wide x 0.18m deep. Five fragments of peg-tile were retrieved from this feature, providing a date of AD 1300-1600. These might relate to The Old House or, alternatively, might be the product of earlier activity at this site.<1>
