Description

Archaeological evaluation, comprising one trial-trench (9m long x 1.80m wide) and two test-pits (each 1.5m x 1.5m in area), was carried out by Colchester Archaeological Trust in May 2019 at the White Hart Hotel, 1 High Street, West Mersea, in advance of refurbishments and extensions to the existing building. The evaluation revealed post-medieval and modern layers sealing natural sands. A post-medieval brick-lined soakaway/cesspit (samples of bricks taken from the arched roof were of 19th- to 20th-century date), a 19th-century brick wall foundation and an undated pit were excavated and were likely to be associated with the existing building, which dates from the 18th century.<1>
