Description

A trial trenched evaluation (5 trenches totaling 80m x 1.8m) was undetaken by Colchester Archaeological Trust in September 2017 (CBC planning application 171579 for the demolition of exisiting school and erection of a new school on a similar footprint). The evaluation detected remains (in T4) which are potentially those of the Gosbecks-Colchester Roman road (MCC2529). In particular, two shallow, parallel ditches F5 and F6 in T4, aligned NE to SW c.2m apart, could define a footway/line of the road. Additionally, one ditch, three tree throws and a possible linear/natural feature were identified. A single small, undated (but probably quite recent) iron disc was the only find recovered during the evaluation. This came from layer L4 (2) in T2, described as a buried topsoil that directly sealed the undisturbed natural (L3).<1>
