Description

A trial excavation was undertaken in 1971 in the garden of No 22 Crouch Street to establish the depth and likely nature of any archaeological remains in the vicinity ahead of the construction of the inner relief road. The investigation revealed a deep accumulation of top soil / dark earth together with medieval and post medieval pits. As the site was located where it was proposed to build a new round-about which would involve little disturbance, the excavation was stopped and the trench backfilled.<1>
