Description
A trial-trenched evaluation, comprising four trenches (each 30m x 1.8m in size), all aligned N to S, targeted on two large linear soil marks identified by aerial photography, was undertaken by Archaeological Solutions in order to inform a planning application for redevelopment of Stanway School playing field (0.3% sample of c.7ha. site). Natural was defined at c.0.45-0.60m in depth.<1>
Trenches 3 and 4 (in the east part of the site) both revealed two parallel ditches aligned NW-SE, and which may represent an early trackway (defined by aerial photography). In Trench 3, two ditches, F1012 (c.1.80m wide x 0.18m deep) and F1014 (c.1.80m wide x 0.24m deep), were defined, 3.0m apart. In Trench 4, the two ditches were 4.20m apart; F1004 was 1.60m wide x 0.20m and F1006 was 1.80m wide x 0.32m deep. No finds were recovered from any of the excavated ditch segments.
Trench 3 also revealed an undated post-hole F1008 and a pit F1010, the latter containing three abraded sherds of probable Iron Age date.
