Description

A test pit, c.200 x 100cm in size, was excavated in the area to the north of (and up to) the (lump of) collapsed masonry, to the south of Duncan's Gate, which is interpreted as the remains of a collapsed gate tower. The test pit exposed the top of the Roman drain, aligned N to S through the gateway, c.20cm below ground level. No in situ archaeological deposits were excavated; the test pit was entirely through modern layers deposited on the site since the 1920s excavation to assess the depth bgl of intect archaeological remains.<1>
