Description

Excavations took place on a vacant site to north of No's 1-5 Trinity Street and revealed part of the cellars and foundations of No.1 Trinity Street which had been demolished in 1947. The recording of these features was undertaken in conjunction with a building survey of the standing structure during its renovation (see ECC1071).<1> A series of Roman floors and walls were noted belonging to a least one house dating to the 2nd-4th century, traces of a possible hypocaust, as well as Roman cellar and gravel surface noted. Also a pit containing 14th-15th century pottery was found, the pit was possibly a stolehole for a nearby kiln.<2>
