Description

During March and April 2001, Hertfordshire Archaeological Trust (HAT) carried out a programme of archaeological monitoring and recording at St. Peter's Street, Colchester. The work was commissioned by Hopkins Homes Ltd during the redevelopment of office premises into residential units. The site is situated north of Colchester town centre, fronting St. Peter's Street. Formally office premises (now demolished) with hard surface car parking, the site is fairly level but has a gradual slope to the north. No in situ archaeological features or finds were recorded. The depth of modern made ground observed throughout the site suggests that the required groundworks were not sufficiently deep to disturb any archaeological stratigraphy. It is therefore possible that more coherent archaeological deposits may be preserved at greater depth than the 1.3m that was the deepest excavation undertaken during the monitoring Trench B.
