Description
Two monitoring visits were carried on the 24th and the 31st August 2004, during the digging out and widening of a cellar to the rear of the property. This was done with a view to creating steps from the garden into the basement. The sides of the cellar were slightly widened by hand from 2m by 1.5m to 2.4m by 2.5m. The cellar was cleared of modern infill by hand, to a depth of 2.2m below the garden level.
Below the southern wall of the cellar, at 2.2m depth, contractors ha disturbed the skull of an inhumation of an adult, with the head to the west, facing north. The skull was almost complete and the lower jaw was present. It is thought that the body was laid on its side with its hands to its chest as the broken radius and ulna to one arm plus two finger bones were also surviving, near the head. A grave cut could be determined, cut into the natural sand and gravel. Only a 600mm length of the grave was exposed as the eastern part of the body was outside the limit of the excavation and had probably been partially removed by the cellar foundation.
A section drawing was made and a plan of the cellar and some digital and slide photographs were taken. <1>
