Description

During the digging of a BT cable trench from Head Street to Southway, Colchester, the central pier of the south-west gate into the Roman town was uncovered close to the modern surface. The excavated area measured approximately 3.5m north-south by 1.65m east-west, and was up to 1m below the modern ground-level. Other Roman and later remains in the trench included foundations, road metalling and pits. <1>
