Description

17 archaeological trial trenches (many of which were no more than test pits) were excavated in the Osborne Street and Vineyard Street areas of Colchester between January and April 2004 (Vineyard Gate); the area was divided into 17 areas. In places, Roman deposits were encountered no more than 0.50m below the ground surface. An inhumation burial was defined in Area 10. Waterlogged stakes and planks were defined in Area 12. The archaeological works took place as part of a wide-ranging programme of ground investigation, including environmental and engineering bore-holes which were archaeologically monitored and reported on in CAT Report 262 (March 2004).<1>
