Description

An evaluation by two trial-trenches at 4 St Peter's Street Colchester located a mortar floor at 1.5m below present ground. The associated dating evidence is not conclusive: the floor could be medieval or Roman. The nature of the floor and the associated tesserae and opus signinum fragments would suggest a Roman date for this structure, but the finds overlying the floor were medieval pottery and tile suggesting the floor dates to slightly before the 13th-15th centuries. Fragments of a medieval louver suggests that a high status medieval house stood nearby.<1>
