Description

A watching brief was undertaken by Colchester Archaeological Trust in 2000, during the development of land for a new catering block at Colchester Institute (CBC planning application F/COL/00/0692). Approximately 500mm-700mm of turf and topsoil had been already stripped off over the area of the footprint of the new building and the site was very muddy and rutted by machines, so visibility was very poor. A number of 1st century AD (mainly pre-AD 75) amphora were recovered (19.3kg). Five possible pits were recorded, only one of which was dated (to the early Roman period). A short stretch of mortared Roman tiles, presumed to be a Roman wall or foundation, was found by the contractors after the watching brief had finished. <1> Accession No COLEM2001.3 <2>
