Description

Correspondence in the Museum files discuss an excavation on the site of the Fleece Inn on Head Street (Now the Halifax building on the corner of Head Street and Culver Street). A letter records, 'A trench was cut into the cellar of the Fleece, but this showed that the cellar itself had been cut into the natural soil, and the stone wall overlaid 19th century material so it must have been a reconstruction using old material. The septaria have been collected for use on the Roman wall. The other cutting was taken down to the agreed depth which was about the natural level. It revealed several large rubbish pits of Georgian or Victorian date, but there was one late Roman pot of the 4th century which could not be fully explored' Two Roman coins and a William III halfpenny were recovered. <1>
