Description

A small evaluation was excavated in the south west corner of the yard at the rear of number 47 Butt Road ahead of a proposed office extension. The slight concrete and tarmac hard standing of the yard was found to rest on a thin layer of dark soil containing modern brick, tile and pottery fragments. This directly sealed the natural sand subsoil at a depth of approximately 0.16m below the present yard surface. A number of features were found to have been cut into the underlying sand including the disturbed remains of a late Roman burial. The proximity of the burial to the modern ground level suggests that the general site levels have been substantially reduced probably as a result of Victorian terracing and later work to create the present hard standing. The presence of a second grave was indicated by a rectangular feature.<1><2>
