Description

A soil survey was conducted on a site to the east of Ipswich Road which was due to be developed as part of a housing scheme. An initial investigation was undertaken in 1980 when three trial holes were excavated over the part of the site that was accessible at the time (see ECC2141). An additional six holes were excavated in 1985 at a depth of 1.6 to 1.9 metres using a small mechanical digger. The overall distribution of subsoil conditions across the site confirmed the existence of glacial deposits 'typical' of the north side of the town, that is areas of both sand and gravel or clay. Nothing of archaeological significance was noted.<1>
