Description
The Angel Inn occupied a site on the corner of West Stockwell Street and the High Street. Richard Shackle undertook building recording in 1987, when the Borough Council were re-developing Angel Yard as Council offices. The surviving structure was in three parts:
1. A jettied front range facing the High Street.
2. A rear jettied range facing towards West Stockwell Street, but set back behind the front range.
3. A jettied range joined onto 2. with the jetty support by elaborate carved brackets (this section of the building was demolished).
Ranges 1 and 2 are built of substantial timbers and were probably built c.1500 AD, according to Shackle. The third range, of inferior quality timbers and with moulding, is given a later date of c.1650.<1>
