Description
An archaeological evaluation was carried out on a site between the former Ship Public House and No.3 East Hill. A modern wall at the southern end of the site appeared to sit on an earlier wall and a trench was dug to examine its extent. No trace was seen and it is now assumed to have been the remains of a ?16th-18th century footing for a timber framed building of reused Roman material and peg-tile. Natural sand in trench 1 was approximately 2 m below the modern ground surface. Two further trenches were dug in the centre of the site but showed no archaeological features. The natural sand in the second trench was 1 m below the surface and in the third trench, 1.5 m below ground level. No distinct layers were visible in the trench sections which contained brown sandy loam with occasional mortar and brick fragments. A fourth trench was dug at the north end of the site and revealed only natural sand a few centimetres below the surface. This was cut by an undated pit. From the evidence of the trenches it was assumed that the site contains no significant archaeological features<1>
