Description

A small trial trench was excavated ahead of the construction of an access ramp into the rear garden of No.18 North Hill. The trench revealed a small patch of Roman tessellated paving at a depth of 1.5m. At a higher point the trench uncovered a stretch of later walling, possibly medieval; also a stone and tile surface, perhaps part of a yard. It was recommended that a watching brief be held during construction of the ramp which would remove the shallower, later features.<1> The tessellated pavement is likely to be part of the pavements recorded by Wire between 1845-1847 (see ECC161).
