Description
In May 1852 a tessellated pavement was found 18" from the surface at a point marked on the OS 10ft map (with the date '1852 and 1853' <1>) under Castle Road opposite Radnor Terrace. Dr Duncan records 'a tessellated pavement in the Botanic Garden, which consisted of a bed of concrete and superimposed tesserae'.<2> Duncan also records a pavement was cut across between the Town Wall and Greyfriars, it was about 18ins below the surface, it consisted of middle sized tesserae of brick, placed upon a foundation of concrete, into whose composition roughly powdered red tile materially entered. <3> William Wire's diary 14/5/1852 records 'Purchased several fragments of the above pavement which was made with the centre of black tesserae, the outer part red, the dimensions as far as could be measured, as the whole was not uncovered, were 10ft from N-S and 30ft from E-W, being the entire width of the road'. <4><5>
