Description

A note by Hull records 'In 1926 a trench was cut in the roadway against the north curb opposite Scheregate steps. The natural yellow sand lies at six feet from the surface, but opposite the east side of the steps the sand sloped steeply down from west to east, giving the effect of a pit with sloping sides (or the butt-end of a ditch). Large pieces of cooking pots and platters were found in this hollow, below the six foot level'.<1>
