Description

A note by Hull records 'When making a dug-out in the vacant ground N of Lexden Rectory, in Glen Avenue an old ditch filled with black soil was discovered. It ran in a slightly NW direction compared with the actual lay-out of Glen Avenue. It was roughly 8ft wide at the top and about 5ft 6" deep to the bottom from the present ground level. The west side was of somewhat broken character; the bottom seemed to have some rain wash, but this was not examined closely. On the east side at the junction of the top black soil with the gravel, there was a layer, 6" thick, of road material such as would remain from an old side road of uncertain use and not comparable with a main hard road. So far as Mr P.G. Laver knew there had been no alteration on Glen Avenue, formerly Cutthroat Lane Diary, 7/7/1940.' <1><2>
