Description

A watching brief was held during the digging of a foundation for an extension to the squash courts. The excavation revealed a section of walling and foundation. The foundation was 4.6 m wide and constructed of gravel, with a section of masonry surviving in situ on the north side. The foundation was cut from a mixed layer of dumped material on the north side and was sealed by a layer of septaria cobbles, extending some 75cm beyond the masonry wall. To the south was a fairly natural soil profile. Several graves were discovered to the north of the wall by the builders, as well as a scatter of bones to the south. A feature resembling a robber trench was noted in the southern trench against the side of the Officers Squash Courts (north side). It did not appear to be in the south side of the trench and was not fully understood.<1>
