Description
A note by Rex Hull records, "On Nov 1st 1946 I had word that a trench for a drain was open across the lawn in front of 'The Lindens', (No 139) Lexden Road. On inspection it was found to run North- South approximately at right angles to the main road, and opposite the centre of the eastern bay window of the house. Its exact position has been marked on the 25" OS map (not located)" A section drawing is provided with the report. It continues "31 ft from the south fence there was a deep and narrow U shaped trench or channel filled with a sandy white material. It crossed the trench slightly diagonally, tapering as it does so, from 3ft wide on the west to 2ft on the east. The depth was 5ft... Fifteen feet further north there appeared to have been a more considerable ditch crossing the trench at right angles. The south lip was 41ft 6" from the South fence, and the width, to the north lip was 13ft 6". The depth was not ascertained as it sank, probably, below that of the bottom of the trench. The sides sloped steeply...13ft 6" north of the ditch there was a slight pocket in the top of the subsoil, forming the bottom of a small pit in the upper soil...This is clearly a domestic rubbish pit of the Cunobeline-Claudian period".<1> Pottery dated to AD 30-50.<2>
