Description

On June 30th 1949 Rex Hull observed that a hole for a petrol tank was open in the yard of the garage on the east side of Wellesley Road (17 paces south of the building line of Crouch Street and 3ft east of the building line of Wellesley Road). A shallow rounded ditch was observed, its bottom 8ft from the surface cut into the natural gravel. It contained a dark greasy fill which extended up to a rubbish layer all around the hole. Hull says 'Whether this was a ditch or not we cannot say, but it seemed to run obliquely across the bottom of the hole, as certainly did a rectangular excavation which possibly ran parallel to it on the south, and which had vertical sides'. Sherds of Medieval pottery were found.<1> The location is marked by hand on the museum copy of the 1:500 1876 map.<2>
