Description

A watching brief was held during phase 2 of the redevelopment of the Balkerne Gardens. In March 1978, the site for Parsley House was cleared of up to 0.8m of topsoil. A series of 0.6m wide trenches was then cut to depths of 2.5m to 3.0m. The north-east corner of Parsley House occupies part of the site of No.5 Balkerne Gardens , where excavations took place in 1965 (see ECC659). Roman foundations, the north-south street between Insula 17a and 17b, and traces of a Roman yard were encountered.<1> See also ECC1481 (watching brief for Phase 1).
