Description
A watching brief was maintained during the excavation of four service trenches across the south -east part of the crescent. A right-angled corner of a Roman wall was uncovered in Trench 3 along with a damaged Roman floor of opus signinum over ?make-up or sandy clay. No clear metalling was observed in this trench. The top of the wall was 0.3m below the modern surface. Roman road gravel belonging to a north-south street was exposed in trench 2, 0.4m below the modern ground level. Trenches 1 and 4 appeared to be cut through mainly modern material and there was no sign of street metalling.<1>
