Description
A watching brief was maintained during the construction of a large multi-storey car park and shops on the site of a former surface car park, shops and houses. "The new building was constructed on piles so that there was very little opportunity to observe sections. A preliminary survey carried out by trial borings in 1974 indicated that there was likely to be at least 2 metres of dark soil above natural. Many of the pile holes were observed during construction work and many objects or observations were noted on the site plan? Roman and later finds were recovered from all parts of the site. No clear indications were noted of burials or buildings apart from a layer of gravel which seems to be at a depth of 3.5 metres to 4.0 metres near the centre of the northern frontage. Noticeable was a concentration of Roman material from the western part of the site. Post Roman remains consisted of a brick culvert and three wells. There were many indications of substantial quantities of ground water.<1>
