Description

Observations were made of some small pits of irregular shapes and depths dug illicitly on the site of some of the kilns of Warren Field at Sheepen. "The exact extent of the holes was not clear because of mounds of loose earth. Part of a Roman wall of tile and Kentish ragstone was exposed which was first uncovered during the excavation of 1959. Also exposed was the south-west part of kiln 30. A further area of disturbed ground to the east produced a fragment of samian mould, fragments of kiln wall and pottery…Finds …may indicate either the presence of a second samian kiln or else material from the first kiln (Kiln 21) redeposited in Roman times or left as spoil from the 1959 excavations."
