A watching brief was maintained during the construction of a rear extension to No.9 High Street (Barclays Bank). Observations were made of the foundation trenches for the north and east walls of the new building. Elsewhere the trenches were either concreted or obscured by shoring. "No convincing Roman deposits could be seen. The area was extensively pitted, possibly in the medieval period. The sections were largely composed of slightly differing shades of dark brown sandy loam pit-fill flecked with oyster and tile fragments. In one trench this material was cut by the base of a 3 metre long, north-south wall built mainly of reused septaria with some peg tile. Approximately midway along the contractor's northern trench, the corner of a 2 metre deep, flat-bottomed feature with vertical sides could be seen.... If a robbed foundation, the part exposed appears to have been at the north-east corner of a structure, the date of which is unclear. Natural sand was noted at depths of 1.65 metres (in the north-east corner) and 1.9 metres (in the south-east corner) from the present pavement level in Culver Street".<1>
