Description

Record of a quantity of Roman pottery found at Serpentine Walk (in Strowlger's and Humm's ground), including fragments of Amphora and mortaria. A handwritten note in the paper SMR, possibly by Rex Hull records 'although not positive, probably a Kiln site of c.200AD, found just at the corner of Margaret Road'.<1><2> This may be the same as the finds mentioned in the Museum Journal 'Serpentine Walk. Indications of the presence of Roman kilns here have been noted from time to time; a further batch of pottery includes two mortarium rims stamped by Martinus, one of the potters of the kilns found in 1933 in field 1074. The position is at the corner of Margatet Road. COLEM 1938.15.'<3> See also comments by Hull in <4>
