Description

CHAPPEL THE STREET 1. 5214 TL 8928 28/6 Church of St Barnabas 7.4.65 I GV 2. C13 Early English Church with nave and chancel of unbroken height and ground plan. Western bell turret and spire both of square plan and weatherboarded. Walls of coursed flint and rubble. South porch of C18 character, West end with some indurated gravel and 2 Early English lancets of 3 cinque-foiled lights in 4 centred heads. Late C14 window in centre and one Gothic window in gable apex. String courses very prominent. East end 2 Norman windows with Y-tracery window between them having a quatrefoiled head. South wall with C14, C15 and C19 windows. South door much altered, now square headed. Roof of 7 cants, chase-tenoned for full length. Bell turret contemporary with roof. Pulpit C17. Two chests. Formerly a chapel of ease to Great Tey, consecrated in 1382. Listing NGR: TL8941628367
