Full Description

Pipe-makers kiln (c.1680-1720). <1> This source gives NGR TL 99782525. The kiln was bulldozed but a number of pieces of the sagger or inner chamber. The walls were composed of hundreds of stems and bowl fragments from broken rejected clay pipes. Excavation of these showed the pipe-makers used Dutch pipes and stems to make the sagger wall. Three distinctive types of pipe, dating 1680-1720, were found, including one type not previously recorded in Colchester. <2>
