The remains of a probable Roman hypocaust were observed during the excavation of a pipe trench in Castle Park, 1983 (ECC375). The remains consisted of a badly disturbed series of tile stacks, set in yellowish mortar with burnt inner edges, which appeared to form channels. The hypocaust was bound to the south by a wall foundation as represented by an east-west robber trench (see MCC1291) which in turn met a north-south robber trench/wall foundation (see MCC1292). This separated two tessellated pavements, presumably in different rooms (see MCC1293 and MCC1294) the western one of which was defined along its southern edge by another robber trench/wall foundation (see MCC1295).<1> All these remains are likely to represent three or more rooms of a Roman building.
