Full Description

During excavations at 11 Magdalen Street in 1974 (ECC350) the southern side of a medieval hollow way was revealed. The hollow way was filled with a succession of lightly gravelled, patchy surfaces separated by layers of sand make-up. Pottery showed that the sunken street was in use for several centuries, beginning in the 11th or 12th century and continuing until the 14th or 15th century. The earliest surface was 1.3m below the natural sand to the south and sealed a small pit or depression (see MCC1248). The southern side of the street sloped at an angle of 45 degrees.<1>
