Monument record: MCC2080 Roman Theatre, Maidenburgh Street, Colchester (Monument)Roman Theatre, (west of) Maidenburgh Street and (south of) St Helen's Lane. A 'D'-shaped Roman theatre stood to the west of, and adjacent to, the Temple of Claudius, facing northwards down the slope to the River (to the south of St Helens Lane) in Insula 13. It was built of septaria and tile, although heavily robbed, and would have been large enough to accommodate a seated audience of at least 3,000. It is estimated in size at 70m E to W and 37m N to S. Excavations in 1981-2 dated the theatre to the 2nd-3rd centuries. See MCC2831 for the Roman theatre at Gosbecks.
