Full Description

Archaeological monitoring and recording was undertaken at 52 Creffield Road, Colchester, in July 2016 in advance of the erection of a small rear extension (CBC planning application 152093 for rear extension). A deposit of soil was encountered which contained Roman finds - 1st-2nd century AD pottery, roof tile, flue tile and opus signinum. No features were defined, but the intervention was small and comprised a single foundation trench 4m long. The layer of soil, 0.90m thick below toposil and above natural (encountered at c.1.0m deep) was interpreted by the excavator as a 'dumped or made ground deposit of Roman date'.<1>
