A single possible inhumation grave cut was observed during a watching brief on a site within the Roman 'West Cemetery' of Colchester. No coffin nails or other objects associated with the ?grave were found, but Roman pottery was recovered from the overlying strata.

Full Description

A single possible inhumation grave cut was observed during a watching brief (groundworks for the erection of a new dwelling) on a site within the Roman 'West Cemetery' of Colchester. No coffin nails or other objects associated with the ?grave were found, but Roman pottery was recovered from the overlying strata.<1>

F1: possible grave, aligned east-west. Fill dry dark brown sandy silt. As this was at foundation level, no excavation was necessary. No coffin nails or other finds were retrieved. Observed during the excavation of soakaway in the south-west corner of the site.
