Building record MCC9237 - Air-raid shelter 6, Area C2, Colchester Garrison, Colchester
Summary
One of a group of WWII air raid shelters recorded prior to demolition. Like shelter 5 (MCC9236), the shelter had been already destroyed above ground and neither of them appears on the 1949 RE map of the Garrison, so they had presumably been built over by that time. The ground plan was planned with a Total Station and photographed.

Full Description
Shelter 6 was aligned east to west and had three remaining steps at the east end and four at the north end. The surviving length of the eastern entrance was 4.4m by 1m wide, the western entrance 4.65m long. Both entrances led into the central chamber from the south and were identical to each other. The remaining steps led down into a corridor that ended in a recess (87cm deep) and had a poured concrete floor with five 60cm by 46cm concrete slabs set into it.
The surviving details of the central chamber were identical to shelter 5 (MCC9236) in all respects. <1>
This shelter is referred to as CF103 in the Area C2 excavation report (CAT Report 412). <2>
