Full Description
Elms Farm is a historic farmstead first shown on the 1897-1904 Epoch 2 map, located on the northern outskirts of the settlement of Tiptree. It is a large interlinked site, forming a single courtyard. The farmhouse is separate to the rest of the buildings. Over 80% of the farmstead survives, with three of the buildings listed. These are the Grade II listed late C16 Elm Farmhouse (LB Number: 1266593), the Grade II listed late C17 barn (LB Number: 1224969) and the Grade II listed C19 stable (LB Number: 1266570). The barn was built in two stages, one in the late C17 and the second in the late C18. The stable was originally built to be a granary in the C17, but was converted into a stable in C19. The demolished buildings disappeared between 1958 and 1972, however the reason for this is currently unknown. The house has undergone an extension to the east side, extending by 5.4m and gaining an area of 22.58sqm. The site's use seems to still be agricultural, as there is absolutely no evidence for a change of use. Two historic landscape features surround the site, with a farm pond to the north and a small area of trees to the west, across the road. There was one more farm pond, located to the south of the site, however this was removed between 1904 and 1922.<1>
