Full Description
Mile-End Heath is shown on the 1777 Chapman & Andre Historic Map, to the north of Colchester. The very large heath heath is shown on this map to be an irregular shape, with an area of 120.5ha. The map shows numerous buildings around the edge of the heath. (At least) Two of these seem to be listed buildings. They seem to include the Grade II listed C16 Church Farmhouse (LB Number: 1123567) and the Grade II listed c.1750 house Tubbeswick (LB Number: 1389621). There were also two windmills marked on the edge of the heath.
The heath is shown on the 1st edition OS 1:10000 but it is not depicted on later maps, and the land had been parcelled into fields by the time of the OS 1:2500 Epoch 1, and Severalls Asylum Hospital (MCC5015) was erected over the heath, opened in 1913.<1>
